Kitepower Australia is a family owned business, which started trading from 289 Latrobe Terrace Geelong/Djilang, Victoria in 1993 (now CLOSED) on Wathaurong Country.  The owners Steve McCormack, Julie Nagorcka and Peace McCormack including Julie's son Goshen Watts (former owner of the Geelong store) had been selling, repairing and flying kites since 1991 in the Geelong and district areas. The Kitepower retail store is now located in Sans Souci/Bediagal Clan Country and together with it's online store, Kitepower Australia is proud to be Australia's largest and longest running specialty retailer of everything to do with Kites and Kiteboarding.

Our main aims at Kitepower are to promote the benefits and fun of kite flying, through all the sport’s forms, from kids single line kites to the amazing sport of kiteboarding/kitesurfing and now including hydrofoiling and Wind Wings. In the past we have either founded or helped to support many kiting organisations including the Australian Kite Society; the Australian Kite Association; Australian Kite Surfing Association - now Kiteboarding Australia; New South Wales Kiteboarding Association; the International Kiteboarding Organisation, and the Geelong and District Kite Club.

Below is a short insight into the name Kitepower, by the founder, Steve McCormack:

Hi,

There is a great sense of fun and happiness which kite flying seems to bring to everyone I have met through kiting - from children with their first kite to experienced kite fliers, kite surfers and power kiters. I called this business Kitepower because of the powerful changes that occurred in my own life when I finally found something I loved to do, and because of the changes that I have observed in so many other people, especially younger people.

Sometime during 1991 when I was wandering through a trash and treasure market with my sons Peace and Goshen, we came across a stall selling a secondhand 2 line stunt kite called the "Avenger”,  which was a USA made 1.8m wingspan delta shape with “ Skyclaw” handles and kevlar lines. We did a deal with the vendor and later that day the wind came up,  so my 2 sons and I went to the highest hill in town and the "Avenger" dragged us around for hours all over this bumpy sheep paddock. We were hooked immediately, so be warned, kite flying can be addictive and life changing!

We soon decided to try to make a living from selling kites and leased a shop in 1993, since then we have evolved into the largest family owned kite business in Australia. We grew out of our shop in Geelong, Victoria (near Bells Beach/Torquay) bought a store in Mooloolaba called Kite Legends,  then sold it, with the intention to move back and expand the Geelong shop. We heard through kite industry contacts about a kite business for sale in Coogee, Sydney, checked it out and bought it from our friends Mike and Rosie Richards. Since then we have grown some more, so we sold the Coogee business and opened a store in Sans Souci, Sydney, to specialise in kiteboarding and power kiting at this perfect bayside location.

Please feel free to contact us on any subject relating to kites and kiteboarding,  We are most happy to help you in any way we can.

Cya and

GOODWINDS,

Steve McCormack
